The new plans mean no more buffering and slow downloads, but until then, find the right broadband package for you with the Mirror’s Digital Switching Service.
The UK’s Communications Minister Edward Vaizey has hinted the government’s plans to reach total superfast broadband coverage in Britain within the next few years.
Broadband Delivery UK, or BDUK, and its related projects have been working towards a target of 95% coverage by 2017, which should rise to 99% in 2018 when you include mobile broadband as well.
This £1.2billion project has been bringing superfast broadband, capable of speeds in excess of 24Mbps, to some particularly hard to reach areas.
However, a new £10million Innovation Fund is currently conducting eight different pilot schemes across the UK, to bring a better service to otherwise completely unreachable areas.
Speaking at the House of Commons, Vaizey said: “Local councils are in charge of the roll-out, so they should know where the money should go first for the most impact.
”As I say, we have had phase one to get to 90%, we now have phase two to get to 95%; and the money we have allocated for new technologies will give us the figure we need to get to 100%.”
