VIAVI Solutions announced that Proximus, the largest telecommunications company in Belgium, has selected the VIAVI ONMSi Optical Network Monitoring System to test and monitor Proximus’s expanding fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network at the build-out stage to help maintain quality and reliability.

As Proximus accelerates fiber deployment to enhance its high-speed, triple-play service offering to subscribers, the VIAVI ONMSi system will ensure the fiber optic network is qualified according to Proximus standards, performs reliably during roll-out, and reduces the mean time to repair (MTTR) once the network is live. The ONMSi system operates 24/7 to provide remote fiber network testing, improving reliability and productivity.

“Proximus is successfully expanding its FTTH technology into residential areas – we chose VIAVI to help us deliver a high-performing network so subscribers can enjoy dependable voice, video and data services, and fast internet access,” said Guillaume Guevar, Director Fiber, Proximus. “VIAVI provided an integrated test tool that gives us full visibility into our FTTH network performance to quickly identify and prevent potential service-affecting network issues.”

The scalable VIAVI ONMSi system was chosen to support Proximus in the first phase of FTTH roll-out and installation. VIAVI is also supporting the second phase, proactively detecting and locating fiber degradation accurately, and alerting operators with the details of faults from a central office using the OTU-8000 Optical Test Unit combining optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and optical-switch technology.

The measurements, recorded in a central database, allow Proximus to assess long-term fiber performance for efficient asset management. The VIAVI solution also eliminates the need for portable equipment use by field technicians.

“VIAVI is proud to collaborate with Proximus at this exciting time of its FTTH network expansion to improve the quality, speed and bandwidth capacity of its communications network,” said Manuel Mato, Vice President, Europe, Middle East and Africa, VIAVI Solutions. “VIAVI’s proven fiber optic test experience is a great fit for Proximus to confidently embrace the benefits of fiber optic technology.”
