Virgin Media Business has begun linking up public sector organisations across Yorkshire and Humberside as part of a brand new Public Services Network (PSN) initiative. The network is one of the first PSN projects to be delivered through the Government’s PSN connectivity framework and has the potential to connect up to 52 public service providers including local authorities, health, police and blue light services.

Partner organisations will soon benefit from access to an exciting range of innovative PSN compliant solutions which can all be bought in one place, under this single Government framework. The beauty of the agreement is that any organisation, large or small, has access to the same technology at lower prices. That’s because with multiple organisations on board, ICT purchasing costs can be spread more widely and organisations obtain better value from the market though aggregated spending.

It’s not only saving costs on ICT infrastructure, it’s also starting to give frontline staff a huge boost. With organisations connected over a single PSN compliant network, staff will be able to share information much more readily and services will be more joined up as a result.

For example, in the near future the local police could begin sharing workspaces with local libraries or schools by logging into police systems over the secure connection. This will help them make more efficient use of valuable police and local authority resources. In addition, with access to the same specialist databases, healthcare trusts and local councils can work together to deliver the best level of care to patients, no matter where they’re based.

Geoff Prowling, YHPSN Programme Director said: “A shared services network will give us the tools to work together to deliver excellent frontline services to local people. As a public sector organisation we’re always looking to innovate and Virgin Media Business has embraced our regional aspirations to build a PSN, help us save money and improve our services. Through the recently completed procurement Virgin Media Business has provided the partners with a transparent and innovative commercial model which reduces the risks of buying IT in for public sector.
